3D Communication and Collaboration

This application consists of real-time communication and collaborative tools featured in a three dimensional interactive environment. These extensible worlds can be created and controlled with a content management interface or xml... A prototype/trial can be downloaded here. (or a smaller download without video files here).

This was an project to develop shared virtual spaces in an educational environment. To that end, the first step was to create a shared space. The objectives were:

  1. To investigate user interaction using a virtual whiteboard.
  2. To develop “open” communications either via text-based chat or via audio-visual communications.
  3. To investigate ways of creating immersion in a three-dimensional space.
  4. To identify innovative communication methods.
  5. To consider the demand for virtual worlds in education.
  6. To investigate the learning potential of a virtual world.
  7. To look at the costs involved in the creation of a virtual space.
  8. To investigate the technical and social limitations of a virtual 3D space.
  9. To explore the potential of real world models in a virtual world.
  10. To explore issues relating to communication bandwidth limitations.

  • Download prototype (103MB download[!]. Note: it was designed to run in Shockwave Player, with an initial download of 400k, but this demo wraps everything [eight 3D worlds] up in one go. Also includes video files, which adds an extra 55MB. Sorry!)
